How to save data while traveling: 12 essential tips
Data usage can run out very quickly when traveling, especially when using an eSIM. Here are the best tips to reduce your consumption, avoid overages, and get the most out of your VoyageSIM plan.
1. Disable automatic updates
App updates can consume several hundred MB without you realizing it. Disable them when you're abroad.
2. Activate data saving mode
On iPhone and Android, the "low data usage" mode limits background applications and reduces unnecessary usage.
3. Use Wi-Fi as soon as possible
To download maps, videos, photos or updates, connect to the Wi-Fi at the hotel, cafe or airport.
4. Download your maps before you leave
Google Maps allows you to download entire areas for offline use, which greatly reduces data consumption.
5. Block apps that consume too much power.
On your phone, you can block certain apps (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, etc.) from using mobile data.
6. Use the lightweight versions of the applications
Facebook Lite, Messenger Lite and other 'lite' versions consume much less data.
7. Limit video streaming
Watching TikTok, YouTube, or Netflix in 4K can eat up your data plan in minutes. Use the "low quality" modes.
8. Disable automatic photo backups
Google Photos and iCloud can send hundreds of photos automatically. Block uploads over mobile data.
9. Turn off the hotspot if you are not using it
Tethering can consume a lot of data. Only activate it when needed.
10. Check live consumption
On iPhone: Settings > Cellular Data.
On Android: Settings > Network > Data usage.
