Is your phone eSIM compatible? A simple guide for 2025
Before buying an eSIM for your travels, it is essential to check if your phone is compatible. Not all models support eSIM, and some devices purchased from a carrier may be locked .
1. How do I check if my iPhone is eSIM compatible?
Good news: most recent iPhones are eSIM compatible.
eSIM-compatible iPhones
- iPhone XR, XS, XS Max
- iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
- iPhone SE (2020) and SE (2022)
- iPhone 12 (all models)
- iPhone 13 (all models)
- iPhone 14, 15 and 16 (all models)
Recent iPhones sold in the United States are even eSIM only (no more physical SIM tray). They are therefore still eSIM compatible, provided they are unlocked.
Check on your iPhone
- Open Settings .
- Go to Cellular Data .
- Look for the option "Add an eSIM" or "Add a cellular plan" .
If the option appears: your iPhone is eSIM compatible.
2. Is my Samsung Galaxy eSIM compatible?
Many Samsung Galaxy phones are eSIM compatible, especially the high-end models. Here are the main product ranges.

- Galaxy S21, S21+, S21 Ultra

Check on your Samsung
- Open Settings .
- Go to Connections .
- Tap on SIM Management or SIM Cards .
- If you see "Add an eSIM" : your Samsung is compatible.
3. Google Pixel phones
Google Pixel phones have had excellent eSIM compatibility for several generations.

4. Your phone must also be unlocked.
Even if your phone is eSIM compatible, it must be unlocked. (not locked to a single operator) to accept a VoyageSIM eSIM.
Check iPhone lock
- Open Settings > General > About .
- Look for the line "Lock Operator" .

Unlocking for Samsung / Pixel
The easiest way is to contact your current provider (Bell, Telus, Rogers, etc.) and to request the free unlocking of the phone. In Canada, they are required to do so on newer devices.
5. Common mistakes with eSIM (to avoid)
Many problems stem from an outdated model or a specific incompatible version.
The phone accepts eSIM, but rejects profiles from other providers while it is locked.
