Your cruise might stop in several countries. The important part is checking each destination against the exact coverage list of your selected plan.

Does a travel eSIM work on a Mediterranean cruise?
Yes, while ashore and sometimes near the coast, when your phone can access a supported land-based network. Out at sea, ordinary mobile signals are generally out of range. The ship's own cellular network — sometimes labelled Cellular at Sea or WMS — is different from the terrestrial networks included with an ordinary travel eSIM.
Know before you sail: VoyageSIM's plans described on this page provide land-based mobile data only. They do not include access to the ship's maritime or satellite network. Look into onboard Wi-Fi or a dedicated maritime plan if you need service in open water.

Which Mediterranean ports are covered by a regional eSIM?
Start with your ship's itinerary and check every country, not just the name of the cruise line. This example list helps you identify the right products to check before ordering.
VoyageSIM's current 41-destination Europe eSIM lists Spain, Italy, Greece, France, Croatia and Malta. Do not assume Tunisia or Montenegro is included. Check the full covered-country list for the selected plan before checkout. Mobile reception at a port can still vary by location and network.

How much data and how many days do I need?
Match the validity period to the entire trip, including sea days. Depending on the plan's activation terms, validity can continue to run while you're at sea even if you're not using mobile data. VoyageSIM's Europe range currently includes options valid for 7, 15 and 30 days, with different data allowances.
7 daysShort Mediterranean getaway
15 daysTwo-week cruise itineraries
30 daysA cruise plus extra time on shore

Avoid maritime roaming charges on your Canadian line
Your home SIM may connect to the ship's maritime network when you're offshore. Your Canadian carrier may charge separately for that connection. When you don't want ship cellular roaming, using airplane mode and the ship's Wi-Fi is a useful precaution. Before you reconnect in port, check which SIM is selected for mobile data.
- Confirm that your phone is eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked.
- Choose a VoyageSIM plan covering the countries on your itinerary.
- Install the eSIM using reliable Wi-Fi and the VoyageSIM setup guide.
- In port, use the VoyageSIM data line and any settings required for your plan.
- At sea, avoid unintended connections from your Canadian SIM to the ship's maritime cellular network.
These VoyageSIM plans are data-only. No local phone number, standard cellular calls or text messages are included. Internet-based apps such as WhatsApp can work while connected.

Ship Wi-Fi or a travel eSIM: which should you use?
They solve different problems. A land-based eSIM is most useful while exploring ports, checking directions or looking up excursions. Onboard Wi-Fi can help you stay connected when the ship is beyond coastal mobile coverage. Prices and Wi-Fi performance vary by ship and cruise line.
See our general guide to cruise connectivity for background. This page focuses on choosing a mobile data plan for Mediterranean port countries.
VOYAGESIM · FAQFrequently asked questions
Can I use a travel eSIM in open water?
Not with ordinary VoyageSIM land-based plans. If a coastal network is in range you might briefly connect, but this is not guaranteed. Check ship Wi-Fi or a dedicated maritime plan for offshore access.
Can one plan work in Italy, Greece and Spain?
A regional Europe plan can be a good option if the selected plan explicitly includes all those destinations and any other countries in your itinerary.
Does the Europe eSIM cover Tunisia or Montenegro?
Never assume they are included. Check the coverage list or consider a separate country-specific VoyageSIM option.
Can I keep my Canadian phone number?
Yes, on a compatible phone that supports both lines. Calls, texts and maritime roaming through your Canadian carrier may still be charged.
Should I use airplane mode aboard the ship?
Airplane mode is a helpful way to avoid unintended cellular use on maritime networks. You can enable ship Wi-Fi separately if needed.
