In Shanghai, mobile internet can help with your hotel address, transport, bookings and translation. A prepaid travel eSIM can be prepared before leaving Canada, but internet access in China works differently from what many Canadians expect.

VoyageSIM lists a China eSIM with 1 GB for 7 days at CAD $3.20, plus 3 GB for 15 days at CAD $5.50 among the variants checked. These are data-only plans. Access to individual websites and apps is not guaranteed.
Shanghai airport, transit and travel planning
At the airport, mobile data can help with hotel addresses, transfers and digital tickets. Around the Bund and Pudong, maps and translation apps may help you navigate.
Save your accommodation address in Chinese characters, offline maps and important booking details before flying. Actual connectivity depends on the partner network included in your plan.
Google, WhatsApp and China's internet restrictions
China restricts access to some social networks, search engines and online services. The Government of Canada travel advice discusses these limitations.
An eSIM does not guarantee access to Google, WhatsApp, YouTube or other services, or bypass of restrictions. Make alternative arrangements for essential information and follow local laws.
How much mobile data for Shanghai?
One gigabyte may be suitable for light messaging and searches. Frequent online translation, video, automatic backups and video calls can consume more.
Compare plan validity, allowance and network variants instead of the lowest headline price. CAD prices can change. VoyageSIM does not include a local number, standard cellular voice or SMS.
Installing your China eSIM
Use an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone and follow the instructions emailed with your purchase. Validity start rules vary by plan.
On compatible dual-SIM phones, you may keep your Canadian line while selecting VoyageSIM for data. Review your home carrier's roaming settings and charges.
