Family Travel eSIM: Plans and Hotspot Sharing

For a family trip, one eSIM per phone is usually best when people split up, while one plan with hotspot sharing can work when everyone stays together. A hotspot may reduce the number of plans you need, but it uses more battery and data on the phone providing the connection.

Does a travel eSIM include hotspot sharing?

It depends on the plan, phone, and partner network. Review the offer details before buying. On a Dual SIM iPhone, Personal Hotspot uses the line selected for cellular data. On Android, the menu is usually called Mobile Hotspot, Tethering, or Hotspot.

An eSIM cannot be installed on several phones at the same time. Hotspot sharing instead sends the main phone’s data connection to other devices over Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, or cable.

How much data does a family need?

  • 5 GB: maps, messages, bookings, and light use for a small group.
  • 10 GB: daily navigation, moderate social media, and some internet calls.
  • 20 GB or more: several users, video calls, remote work, or frequent hotspot use.

Add the needs of every connected device. Video autoplay, photo backups, computer updates, and video calls can quickly use a shared allowance.

Frequently asked questions

Can one eSIM be enough for four people?

It can be if hotspot sharing is allowed, everyone stays near the main phone, and the allowance is large enough. Separate eSIMs provide more independence.

Does a hotspot work on a ship or in a car?

Yes when a covered mobile network is available. It does not create a signal at sea or in an area without coverage.

Can everyone keep their number and WhatsApp?

Yes. Internet apps can use VoyageSIM data. Calls and texts on a primary line can still result in carrier charges.

How can the family save data?

Use Low Data Mode, turn off automatic backups and updates, download offline maps, and reserve video for reliable Wi‑Fi.
