Can one eSIM work for several people?

A travel eSIM is generally installed on one phone. If each group member wants independent connectivity, each device normally needs its own plan.

An eSIM is not automatically a shared family subscription. When both the selected plan and phone support hotspot tethering, it may be possible to share data temporarily with nearby devices. That relies on the source phone's battery, network reception and plan rules.

Read our family eSIM and hotspot guide for the practical differences.

How much data does each traveller need?

Light useMessages, maps, booking confirmations and occasional emails.
Regular usePhotos, social apps, music and directions.
Heavy useStreaming, internet calls and tethering where permitted.

Not everyone needs the same gigabyte amount. A parent may mainly use maps and reservations, while a teenager uses more data for video. Ask each person about their habits and try the VoyageSIM data calculator.

VoyageSIM products here are data-only, without local numbers, traditional calls or SMS. A retained Canadian line may still incur home-carrier charges.

National or regional plans for groups?

Choose coverage based on each person's destination. A national plan can work for one country. For cross-border itineraries, a regional or World eSIM may be convenient if every country visited is listed as covered.

Departure and return dates can also differ within the group. Anyone staying longer may need a different validity period. Plan availability and partner networks vary by destination.

Important: do not assume every island, layover or rural location is covered. Read each plan's destination list and restrictions.

Group leader's eSIM checklist

  1. List participants and all relevant destinations.
  2. Check each phone is eSIM-compatible and unlocked.
  3. Record individual data needs and validity periods.
  4. Assign each QR code to its intended phone; do not activate it first on the organizer's device.
  5. Arrange reliable Wi-Fi for installations according to plan terms.
  6. Save reservations and emergency contacts offline.

For minors, see our kids travel eSIM guide. Hotspot sharing is not an emergency communication plan.

Each traveller can compare VoyageSIM data plans for their own phone, destination and dates. Travel agencies and organizers can review the VoyageSIM partner program for potential collaboration.

This page does not promise automatic group discounts, multi-device fleet tools or the ability to activate one QR code across several phones. VoyageSIM offers Quebec-based support for questions about actual plan availability.

Usually on compatible dual-SIM phones, though home-carrier voice and SMS charges may apply.
